Let’s Talk About the Mess

Okay, full disclosure: I almost quit writing about e-commerce last year. It wasn’t the long hours or the low pay—though, honestly, those didn’t help. It was the mess. The absolute, unholy mess that is online shopping these days. And look, I’ve been around the block. I’ve seen the rise and fall of flash sales, the birth of influencer marketing, and the never-ending battle of which platform is actually worth your time.

But something snapped for me about three months ago. It was a Tuesday—I remember because I was supposed to be at a conference in Austin, but I canceled last minute because I couldn’t even figure out how to pack my damn suitcase. I mean, seriously, who decided that online shopping was gonna make our lives easier? Because, newsflash, it’s not. It’s just… yeah.

When Online Shopping Goes Off the Rails

Let me set the scene. I was trying to buy a new laptop bag. Simple, right? Wrong. I spent 36 hours—yes, you read that correctly—36 hours clicking through pages, reading reviews, and watching unboxing videos. And what did I get? A bag that fell apart after two weeks. I kid you not. I was so frustrated, I called up my friend Marcus—let’s call him Marcus because his real name is too embarrassing to share—and I said, “Marcus, I think I’m done. I’m done with this e-commerce garbage.”

He laughed. “You? Done?” he said. “The woman who wrote the definitive guide on how to spot a fake review?” Okay, fair point. But even I have my limits.

So, I did what any self-respecting e-commerce writer would do. I dove headfirst into the abyss. I talked to sellers, buyers, and even some poor soul who works in customer service for one of those “we’ll fix it, we promise” companies. And what I found out? It’s worse than you think.

Why Reviews Are a Joke

Let’s talk about reviews for a second. You know those five-star raves that make you think, “Wow, this product is amazing!”? Yeah, they’re probably fake. I’m not saying all of them are, but enough that you should be skeptical. I had coffee with a colleague named Dave last week—over at that place on 5th, the one with the terrible Wi-Fi—and he told me about a study he read. 78% of consumers don’t trust online reviews. 78%! And honestly, can you blame them?

I remember this one time, I bought a blender based on glowing reviews. It arrived, and it was… well, let’s just say it’s now a very expensive paperweight. I went back to leave a review, and guess what? The site made it so complicated, I gave up. And that’s the problem. The people who have bad experiences often don’t bother leaving reviews, so the ones that are there are either fake or from the most persistent of customers.

The Shipping Nightmare

And don’t even get me started on shipping. I once ordered something at 11:30pm, and the estimated delivery date was the next day. The next day came and went. And the day after that. And the day after that. It finally showed up a week later. When I called customer service, they told me it was “an acquisition issue.” Which, honestly, is just corporate speak for “we have no idea what’s going on.”

But here’s the thing: it’s not all bad. There are ways to make online shopping work for you. You just gotta be smart about it. And by smart, I mean paranoid. Check reviews on multiple sites. Look for inconsistencies. And for the love of all that is holy, don’t believe the hype.

Oh, and if you’re gonna travel, make sure you’ve got your travel packing checklist essentials down. Trust me on this one.

A Quick Rant About Returns

Returns. Ugh. Why is returning something online such a hassle? I bought a shirt last month, and the return process was so complicated, I almost kept it. And it was the wrong color! I mean, come on. If I can order a pizza with one click, why can’t I return a shirt with the same ease?

I asked a friend of mine who works in e-commerce about this. She said, “It’s all about committment. Companies want you to commit to the purchase, even if it’s a mistake.” Which… yeah. Fair enough. But it doesn’t make it any less frustrating.

So, What’s the Point?

Look, I’m not saying you should give up on online shopping. I’m just saying you should go into it with your eyes wide open. Know that the reviews might be fake. Know that the shipping might be a nightmare. Know that returning something might feel like you’re trying to solve a Rubik’s cube blindfolded.

But also know that there are good deals out there. There are great products. You just gotta be willing to do the work. And if you’re not, well, maybe stick to in-store shopping. At least then you can see what you’re getting.

Anyway, that’s my rant. I’m not sure if it’s helpful or just a hot mess of frustration. But it’s how I feel, and honestly, that’s what matters most.
